Pilot test

A small scale pilot test was carried out in September 2011 to evaluate key aspects of the survey design and survey materials prior to the main stage of the survey which began in January 2012.

Two separate pilots were conducted in total; the first pilot tested the English language questionnaire, and this was followed by another pilot to test the Welsh language questionnaire.

The main aims of the pilot test were to:

  • provide a measure of the questionnaire length;
  • identify any issues with the questionnaire or specific questions;
  • allow additional elements to be tested, such as a data linkage question at the end of the survey;
  • assess general perceptions/level of interest in the survey;
  • give the research teams from TNS and the Welsh Government a chance to observe the interview process; and
  • to provide a test of the Welsh translation.

A report that explain how the pilot was carried out and presents the key findings, along with a written response by the Welsh Government to explain what decisions were made with respect to the key findings from the pilot, can be downloaded below.
