Andrew Davies, Minister for Economic Development and Transport
I am sorry to hear that Sony is announcing today that they are restructuring their manufacturing facilities in Wales.  This will result in the loss of 84 jobs in Bridgend and 210 at the Pencoed facility.  The redundancies will be achieved by voluntary redundancy on enhanced package.

The Welsh Development Agency and the Assembly Government are working with the company and will contact Job Centre Plus, Careers Wales and other Agencies to help those people who have been made redundant.

The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to working with the company on a strategy to help them to diversify their operations in Wales.  I have set up a project team to assist the company and meetings have already taken place.

Although this is bad news for the company, Sony continues to be a major employer in the Bridgend area, still accounting for over 1500    staff.  This decision has been a commercial decision and not one taken lightly.  I am personally committed to do all that I can to help the company so that they remain a key employer in Wales.
