I am aware of recent media reports questioning current UK thinking on the use of anti-viral and vaccine in the event of a pandemic flu outbreak.

Wales, along with the rest of the UK, has contributed to preparing the UK Influenza Pandemic Contingency Plan. The Plan deals with all aspects of preparedness, including the use of antivirals, antibiotics, and various vaccines. The UK continues to work closely with the research councils, independent experts and international bodies to ensure that our plans reflect the latest and most up to date research and information.

Our antiviral and vaccine strategy is informed by international consensus and expert advice and is regularly updated. At present the experience is that the chosen antiviral (Tamiflu) does work and should work against a pandemic influenza strain. However, the UK recognises there is a need for continued research on both the development and use of pandemic flu vaccines. The use of antivirals and vaccines is nevertheless just part of an overall package of measures to protect and treat the public in the event of a flu pandemic.
