Responses to the Report’s recommendations are set out below. The recommendations follow the Report’s headings.

Career Opportunities for Journalists - The Committee recommends that:

The Welsh Assembly Government’s Minister for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills reviews the provision of publicly funded training courses for journalists both in further and higher education

1. Accept. This will be considered in the context of the Annual Assessment of Learning and Skills which is carried out by the Department of Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.

2. Financial implications: None.  The assessment will be undertaken within existing resources.

Newspapers and The National Assembly for Wales - The Committee recommends that:

The National Assembly for Wales reviews its newspaper advertising strategy for job recruitment advertisements to ensure that they are placed in newspapers across the whole of Wales

3. Accept. The Welsh Assembly Government is implementing an on-line recruitment system in October 2006 and moving to the sign-posting of advertisements from Welsh newspapers to the Welsh Assembly Governments recruitment website.  It is simply not possible to advertise the full details of every appointment in full details in both languages in every newspaper and journal in Wales.  This would still not achieve universal coverage.  The public quite rightly look to the Welsh Assembly Government to secure value for money.  The on-line recruitment system is currently being developed.  As part of that process, the implementation team will be reviewing the advertising process including the best way of ensuring they are placed in newspapers across the whole of Wales.

4. Financial implications: None.  Signposting of advertisements will reduce costs as full length advertisements will no longer be required.
