I am pleased to announce that from 1st April 2006 the title of the Minister for Economic Development and Transport will be changed to Minister for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks and that of the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning to Minister for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.  These changes reflect the merging of the relevant Assembly Sponsored Public Bodies with their sponsor departments

No changes are being made in Ministerial functions and responsibilities.  


Titles for Departments

Today, the Permanent Secretary has also announced that from the 1st April Departments’ titles will change to reflect the titles of Ministerial Portfolios.  The new Departments will become:


Department for Enterprise, Innovation and Networks
Department for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills
Department for Environment, Planning and Countryside
Department for Health and Social Services
Department for Public Services and Performance
Department for Local Government and Culture
Department for Social Justice and Regeneration


• The Department for Health and Social Services has hitherto been known as the Department for Health and Social Care

• The Department for Local Government and Culture continues to serve two Departmental Ministers


The central service departments of the administration will carry the following departmental titles

Corporate Information and Services Department
Finance Department
Human Resources Department
Legal Services Department
Strategy, Equality and Communications Department
