Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Minister for Heritage.
On August 9 2007, I announced that I had asked the Welsh Language Board to carry out a review of the Welsh language print media.

The purpose of the review was to obtain a clear and comprehensive picture of the state of the printed Welsh medium press in Wales and to look at how the Welsh Assembly Government could implement, in a sustainable way, the recommendation of One Wales "to expand the funding and support for Welsh language magazines and newspapers, including the establishment of a Welsh language daily newspaper".

The Welsh Language Board appointed Dr Tony Bianchi to conduct the review.

Dr Bianchi’s report, which is enclosed with this statement, includes a detailed analysis of the publications which were within the review’s terms of reference (Golwg, Y Cymro, Barn and the new proposed Welsh language daily newspaper, 'Y Byd'), as well as useful international comparisons.

The report suggests a number of recommendations and ideas to strengthen the sector which will hopefully lead to a discussion within the sector and among publishers and Welsh speakers.

I will consider the report carefully before deciding on the next steps.
