Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport.
Connecting the communities of Wales is one of the aspirations of One Wales. Good transport links are essential to achieving this and I am committed to improving our rail network and services, thereby helping to create prosperity and jobs in living communities.

I am delighted to announce that I have asked Arriva Trains Wales to prepare for the introduction of additional train services between Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff to commence from the May 2009 timetable change. From that date, people from Merthyr and the towns on the route will be able to travel half-hourly between Monday and Saturday, double the current frequency of service.

This follows the completion of a major redevelopment of the railway infrastructure and signalling at Abercynon, including a combined new station with full step-free access, and a two mile passing loop and new platform face at Merthyr Vale.

The completed infrastructure works allows preparations to be made for the introduction of this half-hourly service, which I am sure, will be of benefit to all people served along the route.
