The Department for Communities and Tackling Poverty is working to regenerate the communities of Wales, especially those suffering the greatest disadvantages, and aims to ensure people are safe and supported.

Aims

The mission of the Department for Communities and Tackling Poverty is to safeguard and support vulnerable people, combat poverty and social exclusion and promote safe and sustainable communities.

Priorities

We have responsibilities in the following areas:
  • tackling poverty and promoting community regeneration including Communities First
  • community safety including reducing violence against women and domestic abuse and preventing youth offending; provision of fire and rescue services and provision for Community Support Officers
  • supporting the development of the Third Sector and its strategic relationship with government.

Structure

The Director of the Department is Kate Cassidy. The Department also includes two inspectorates:

Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW)

CSSIW is operationally independent of the Welsh Government and encourages the improvement of social care, early years and social services in Wales. 

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW)

On behalf of the citizens of Wales, HIW provides independent and objective assurance of the quality, safety and effectiveness of healthcare services, making recommendations to healthcare organisations to promote improvements.
