Terminology

Terminology management and standardisation is an integral part of the remit of a translation service in a large organisation such as the Welsh Government.

The publication of TermCymru represents the culmination of the standardisation process. The database is regularly updated on the Welsh Government's website. The Translation Service provides terminology advice to Welsh Government departments.
It does not provide an enquiry service to the public.

TermCymru

TermCymru was originally established as a collection of the terms used by translators at the Welsh Government and the National Assembly for Wales in their everyday work. Responsibility for it transferred to the Welsh Government Translation Service in 2005.

The original intention in publishing TermCymru on the website was to share it as a useful tool for translators and, indeed, for anyone dealing with terminology in a bilingual environment. This has certainly been achieved. TermCymru is now firmly established and is used in Wales and beyond as a recognised source of Welsh terms.

The collection is continually updated and has developed into a comprehensive database of standardised terminology in the various areas of Welsh Government business such as education, health and agriculture. These terms include the names of Welsh Government initiatives and programmes, and the titles of documents published by the Welsh Government and other public bodies.
