Consultation

Learning for children and young people in a youth custody setting in Wales-Statutory guidance

The aim of this consultation is to give information and seek views on the new legislation Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009, section 48 – 52. It relates to the education and training of children and young people from Wales in youth custody.
Start of consultation: 19/07/2010
End of consultation: 15/10/2010

The main purpose of those provisions of the Act is to mirror as far as is reasonably practicable the learning arrangements for children and young people in custody with mainstream learning provision in the community.

We seek your views on this guidance because inevitably, supporting the learning of a group of children and young people of;

  • different ages,
  • varying needs, and
  • within the constraints of a secure environment, is challenging.

We recognise this. We want to ensure that learning in custody is aligned as closely as possible with learning in the mainstream sector, whilst at the same time tailoring it to meet the needs of this particular group of children and young people.
