Consultation to collect views about whether a Public Health Bill is needed in Wales

We are seeking your views about the potential role of legislation in helping to make further improvements to overall health in Wales.
Start of consultation: 29/11/2012
End of consultation: 20/02/2013

This consultation meets an important Programme for Government commitment, to:

“consult on the need for a public health bill to place statutory duties on bodies to consider public health issues.”

The Welsh Government is fully committed to improving and protecting the health of people in Wales. There has been an increased emphasis on public health issues in recent years. This has been reflected in documents including Our Healthy Future, Together for Health and Fairer Health Outcomes For All. The Welsh Government has also called for a greater focus on improving everybody’s health, as well as treating people who are ill.

A great deal has already been achieved to improve and protect the health of the population. However, the overall health and wellbeing of people in Wales still does not fully meet our aspirations. There remain a number of complex challenges. These include tackling inequalities in health and doing more to prevent ill health occurring in the first place.

This consultation provides an opportunity to consider whether legislation could help us to further improve overall health and wellbeing in Wales. It starts a debate about whether new legislation would provide an effective way of making further progress in key areas.
