The Welsh Government provides money for the care of the people of Wales. Money is provided as revenue allocations to bodies such as the NHS and in the form of health improvement initiatives. These initiatives encourage organisations to work together to improve the health of our nation.

National Health Service Funding

The NHS receives a particular type of funding known as revenue allocations. This is money we give to Local Health Boards and the Health Commission for Wales to cover the day-to-day running costs of the National Health Service (NHS) in Wales during each Financial Year.

The money is used for:

  • the salaries of all NHS employees in Wales, including hospital doctors, nurses, support staff, ambulance staff and administrative staff who work in the local health boards and NHS trusts
  • the costs of drugs, dressings, and other clinical supplies used for patient care in hospital and in the community
  • the costs of cleaning, heating, and lighting hospitals and their general maintenance
  • the petrol costs of ambulances and other NHS vehicles
  • the payments made to general practitioners to run their practices
  • the costs of drugs prescribed by general practitioners
  • the payments made to local chemists for dispensing NHS drugs.
