Triggering the referendum

Following the findings of the All Wales Convention the First Minister and Deputy First Minister announced their intention, on 2 February 2010, of asking for a Referendum on new powers for the Assembly.

The motion was debated in Plenary, by Assembly Members, on 9 February. 53 members voted in favour of the motion, with no members voting against and no abstentions.

The First Minister gave  formal notice to the Secretary of State for Wales, on 17 February 2010, of the decision of the Assembly to hold a referendum on law making powers and requested that a recommendation should be made to Her Majesty in Council to make an Order in Council to achieve this. On 16 June, the Secretary of State announced her response. This response also made clear the aim to hold a referendum in the first quarter of 2011.
