The grants, established on the recommendation of the Assembly Government’s economic "think tank" the Economic Research Advisory Panel, have been designed to help develop research capacity and widen knowledge and understanding of the economy in Wales by encouraging innovative, smaller-scale economic research.
The five grants are being awarded to support:
- "Deterring violence: penalties, probabilities, perceptions or personalities?"
Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University - "Entrepreneurial aspirations and activity amongst students and recent graduates: a comparative study for Wales."
School of Business and Economics, Swansea University - "Foreign manufacturing in Wales: an economic analysis of industry embeddedness and recent entries and exits."
School of Business and Economics, Swansea University - "Modelling and explaining regional differences in economic prosperity within Wales."
School of Business and Economics, Swansea University - "New insights into the contribution of entrepreneurship around festivals and special events to the economy of Wales."
Welsh Enterprise Institute, Business School, University of Glamorgan
Commenting on the awards, the First Minister said:
These are five interesting research projects examining a range of economic issues of relevance to public money in Wales. I look forward to seeing the outcome of these projects, which promise to help fill important gaps in our knowledge base.
Notes
- The 2007 Economic Research Grants were announced by the First Minister in a press notice on 2nd April 2007. The competition for funding was open to Research Organisations, that is entities (such as universities or research institutes) whose primary goal is to undertake research and disseminate the results through teaching, and/or publication and/or technology transfer; which re-invest any profits in those activities; and which do not have members or shareholders who would enjoy preferential access to the research results.
- £75,000 was made available for the grants, with funding per research project of up to £15,000. The research supported by the grants will be undertaken between 1st October 2007 and 30th September 2008. The reports will be published on the Welsh Assembly Government's internet site.
- Five studies previously supported by Economic Research Grants have been published on the Welsh Assembly Government's website. A further five studies are due to be completed by 30th September 2007 and will be added to the website.
- The Economic Research Advisory Panel comprises seven appointed members representing business and academia, supported by six ex-officio members representing the Welsh Assembly Government and the main economic agencies in Wales. The appointments, which are unpaid, are for up to three years. The Panel met for the first time in June 2002.
