The news was announced today by Business Minister Edwina Hart at a special event to mark the second phase of regeneration at the Welsh Government owned Porth Teigr site and to promote and highlight business and investment opportunities.
BBC Cymru Wales’ 175,000 sq ft complex is the first completed building on Porth Teigr which is the last remaining undeveloped waterfront site in Cardiff Bay.
It is a strategically important mixed-use development that will provide up to 2million sq ft of commercial, retail and residential space, creating an economic stimulus for South Wales.
The Minister said the studios are now operational and their official launch in the spring marks a significant milestone in the long term development of Porth Teigr, one of the most exciting waterfront developments of its kind in Wales.
“Porth Teigr represents a long term investment by the Welsh Government in the future of Cardiff our capital city and 2012 promises to be a significant year as we enter the next phase of regeneration and development.
“This achievement is the result of close partnership working between the public and private sector – between the Welsh Government and its joint venture partner igloo - an Aviva Investors Real Estate Fund.”
The flagship BBC Wales Studio complex is, the Minister said, the centrepiece of Porth Teigr and a corner stone of the Government’s strategy to support the creative industries.
The Welsh Government is investing in the construction of a new Centre for Creative Industries at Porth Teigr during this next phase which will have a gross external area of 40,000 sq ft and the capacity to accommodate approximately 250 people.
Mrs Hart said,
“We want to maximise the benefits and opportunities that can accrue from having such a wealth and concentration of creativity and talent on the doorstep. Our investment in Porth Teigr is designed to create a vibrant waterfront environment that is attractive to businesses, particularly the creative industries.
“The presence of the BBC Wales Studios provides a strong focal point around which we want to create a central hub and cluster for the creative industries across South Wales where companies can work together, share ideas and develop collaborative links with other facilities in the area.”
Highlighting new developments planned for Porth Teigr Mrs Hart said the new Centre for Creative Industries will provide a flexible base for businesses working in these sectors, while the Doctor Who Experience, which opens in the summer, will not only be an important tourism attraction but also a showcase for creative industries in Wales.
Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director, BBC Cymru Wales said,
“BBC Wales isn’t just the national broadcaster for Wales – it is also a major provider of programming for the BBC’s networks. With international successes like Sherlock¸ Doctor Who, Upstairs Downstairs and Merlin, we’re taking Wales to the world, and the creative potential of our new Roath Lock studios for growth and future collaboration is already clear.”
Richard Jones, Aviva Investors’ Real Estate UK Managing Director and Head of Sustainability, commented,
“Sustainability is a core value at Aviva Investors and igloo is our flagship sustainable real estate fund which focuses on delivering sustainable developments. This achievement at Porth Teigr demonstrates the fantastic progress we’re making in this area. As well as benefiting the environment, we believe sustainable projects add value for our investors as they are more attractive to both occupiers and future purchasers.”
Mark Hallett, Development Director at igloo, says,
“We are absolutely delighted that BBC Wales’ Roath Lock studios at Porth Teigr has been rated as BREEAM Outstanding. This is something that the entire development team has been working towards from the very beginning, and the achievement is testament to their hard work and commitment.”
Congratulating all those involved in achieving the BREEAM Outstanding rating the Minister said these green credentials would set the standard for the transformation of Porth Teigr from disused dockland into an environmentally sustainable development with tremendous potential to create a vibrant business and residential location.
