Tributes paid to Joe Calzaghe

The First Minister said:

Joe Calzaghe’s victory at Madison Square Garden over Roy Jones Jnr, sets the seal on one of the most outstanding careers in the history of boxing, whether you are talking about Welsh boxing, British boxing or World boxing.

The way he has conducted himself in and out of the ring has made him a truly outstanding ambassador for his country and his sport.

For sheer skill levels, Joe Calzaghe has showed again, with his outstanding victory over Roy Jones Jnr on his own turf, that he is one of the all time greats in boxing.

Sport Minister Alun Ffred Jones said:

Has there ever been a better Welsh boxer than Joe Calzaghe? To finish his 15-year professional career unbeaten in all of his 46 fights is a tremendous achievement and underlines what a fantastic champion and ambassador for Welsh sport he has been. Ardderchog!
