It's Christmas in Caerphilly!

This is Caerphilly’s fourth Medieval Christmas Fayre, organised by Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment service in partnership with Caerphilly Borough Council to ensure visitors get a unique experience of the sights, sounds and smells of a busy town and castle preparing for Christmas.

There will be plenty on offer for young and old alike in the castle. In the Great Hall you will be able to have a go at pottery and take home your handiwork. If the winter chills set in, the barber surgeon will be available in the marquee with advice on how to cure your coughs and colds medieval style – if you dare!

Caerphilly Castle’s jester will entertain with thrilling juggling, jocular japes and jokes, and the Bruegelesque Singing Plague Victims will assault your ears with entertaining songs and possibly some Christmas music. Children will be able to practice their sword fighting skills with Sir Andrew, the Cadw Knight, in his ‘knight school’ – they might even be chosen to fight a knight of the Harlech Medieval Society! Why not try your hand at pottery making and coin striking?

Around the medieval encampment there will be pewter casting, weaving and seasonal cooking to marvel at. Exciting duels will be fought and festive songs will be sung. And of course Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a visit to Father Christmas, in his grotto in one of the castle towers.

All of this will unfold against a background of the medieval market where traders and craftspeople will be selling traditional, seasonal and decorative goods and there will be plenty of hot and cold refreshments on offer.

Castle admission, which includes all entertainment within the grounds, are as follows: Adults £3.70, Concession £3.30, Family £10.70.
