He said:
"I warmly congratulate Ryan Giggs on winning this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. Ryan has been a great ambassador for the game and for Wales throughout his career. Coming on the heels of his success in the Welsh version of the award last week, it is richly and fully deserved."
“He has been a model professional, who enjoyed a distinguished career with his country, as Captain and as a talisman, in addition to nearly 20 years of top-flight football with one of the most successful clubs in Britain, a remarkable record. He has been a continuing inspiration to grass-roots football players and a supreme example for young players to follow.”
“But he is more than just a great player - his work with UNICEF is of further credit to him and I know that often, when abroad, particularly outside of Europe, and faced with people who have a sketchy knowledge of Wales, his name often comes up as a way of creating an association with our country.”
“I wish Ryan well for the future, both in his continuing career as a player and in whatever path he chooses to pursue after his playing days have ended.”
