£2.2 million boost to Welsh libraries, archives and museums

The funding will be used to improve services, encourage greater participation and learning, conserve important collections, and develop online information and resources that promote Wales’ culture and heritage.

The funding will also help modernise eight public libraries in Wales. Over £1 million will be allocated to provide modern library facilities in Caerphilly, Baglan, Pontycymer, Bettws, Chirk, Mold, Prestatyn and Aberaeron.

A key aspect of the library modernisation programme is to create a cultural hub in the community with flexible space for activities.  Activities will include storytimes for children, free access to computers and Wi-Fi connectivity for mobile devices alongside the ever popular books in an attractive environment.

“Our libraries, museums and archives enrich people’s education and knowledge so it is essential that as many people as possible can access and enjoy their collections. This funding will help achieve our aim to promote our culture and heritage.

“Museums and archives will benefit from grants to conserve important collections for future generations to enjoy and deliver learning activities for people of all ages that bring these collections to life. The projects will engage with local communities by encouraging participation in activities such as learning new skills, how to care for collections and developing exhibitions that reflect the lives of ordinary people.

“Modernisation has contributed to increasing the number of people visiting our libraries while educational work and community projects will also increase the number benefiting from our museums and archives.”

The funding programme is administered by the Welsh Government’s CyMAL: Museums Archives and Libraries Wales division.
