Education Minister Leighton Andrews has awarded £30,090 to the charity, while Sports Minister Huw Lewis has awarded £15,164. The funding will allow the organisation to visit schools and sports clubs and to hold workshops and educational events for an estimated 9,000 young people. Training events will also be held for teachers and workshops arranged for specific groups including young offenders and Gypsy Travellers.

Huw Lewis said:

“With all the recent reports of racism in top flight football, it is clear that this is sadly still an issue in sport. Using sport to educate young people is a very relevant and effective way of tackling the issue that will deliver long-term improvements. I am therefore delighted to be supporting Show Racism the Red Card to help them carry out the excellent work they do across Wales.

Leighton Andrews said:

“It’s vital our learners understand that racism has no place in our society. Show Racism the Red Card continues to lead the way in its use of positive role models, highly successful workshops, educational events and training for teachers. This funding will ensure that the charity can continue with its very important work in tackling racism and promoting equality across the Welsh education system.”

Sanjiv Vedi, Chair of Show Racism the Red Card Wales said:

"This is welcome news at a time when concerns are rife about racism on and off the field across the UK. In Wales we are lucky to have such support from across a real diverse range of funders and to add the name of the Welsh Government is a tribute to the team and the efforts of everyone helping to challenge racism. We can never be complacent".
