A torch of class as school pupils design Olympic torch

Pupils from schools in Llandudno and Llandudno Junction got into the Olympic spirit by taking part in a Welsh Government art competition to design a new torch that reflects the local area.

Artworks by Holly Bonser of Ysgol Bodafon, Lee Jamie Bradley from Ysgol Tudno and Daniel Myles, a pupil at Ysgol Morfa Rhianedd, were chosen as the three winners. Their entries were then combined into one and made into a model by students from Llandrillo College.

The torch was unveiled at the Welsh Government’s office in Llandudno Junction by Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and European Programmes, Alun Davies on Thursday.

There was also an opportunity to see the Olympic torch used by torchbearer Elin Owen who carried the flame on the Ffestiniog Railway.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and European Programmes, Alun Davies said:

"I’m very pleased to have unveiled the model Olympic Torch at the Welsh Government’s office in Llandudno Junction. It’s clear from the artwork on display that this has been a competition that pupils have really enjoyed taking part in.

"I have also been delighted to see the impressive work that students from Coleg Llandrillo have done in making the torch. Both pupils and college students should be extremely proud of themselves.

"The competition continues the strong links that the Welsh Government office in Llandudno Junction has built with schools and colleges and continues the important work of engaging with young people in North Wales.”

Sports Minister Huw Lewis said:

"Pupils from schools in Llandudno Junction and Llandudno have certainly encapsulated the spirit of this summer’s Games through this competition.

"It was great to see thousands of people line the route as the Olympic Torch made its way around Wales and it shows just how much people are looking forward to the Olympics. This project has carried on the feel good factor that surrounds the Games."

Michael Jervis Head of Construction Grwp Llandrillo-Menai Rhos campus said:

"We have been delighted to be involved in this important initiative to promote the Olympics, the standard of work produced by the schools was really high and the tutors spent some time deliberating on the winners. The staff and learners at the College have really enjoyed making the torch, particularly due to the local influences that have been included in the original designs."
