The winners were shortlisted from a record number of nominations and will join other winning teams from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland at the UK Ceremony which will be aired on BBC2 in the autumn.
The Welsh Government has contributed £10,000 for the 2012 Awards, which recognise excellence from across the profession.
A full list of the four Welsh winners and categories is as follows:
The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement
Mrs Glenys Jones, Bishop Hedley RC High School, Merthyr Tydfil.
The Award of Teaching Assistant of the Year
Mrs Yasmin Gedney, Blaenavon Heritage Community School, Gwent.
The Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School
Mr Sion Jones, Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon.
The Award for Outstanding School Team of the Year
English Department, Cynffig Comprehensive School, Bridgend.
Each of the winners above received a nomination in the form of an online Thank You message which was considered by the Pearson Teaching Awards judging panel. Nominations are now being encouraged for the 2013 awards,
Amongst the winners of the individual awards was Sion Jones from Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon, who was nominated by 5 of his students. All were keen to say how their teacher’s passion and enthusiasm for History had inspired them to love the subject.
The headteacher of Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen said that Sion had provided his students with a “first class experience of history at all levels”, describing him as “inspirational, enthusiastic and caring” with a “well-deserved reputation for providing stimulating lessons and incredible examination results.”
Cynffig Comprehensive School’s English Department also won the judges’ praise for its outstanding work in raising standards at all levels and inspiring students of all abilities.
Teachers at the Department captured the imagination of learners by creating engaging, inventive and fun lessons, including turning classrooms into NCIS labs. This resulted in a surge of enthusiasm for the subject, with some pupils starting their A-levels in year 11 and at least half of the sixth form choosing to continue their studies for AS and A Levels.
Winner of The Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement in Wales, Glenys Jones, was identified by judges to be an “exceptional” teacher of Economics and Business Studies - encouraging all of her students to aim high and achieve their aspirations.
Meanwhile, Yasmin Gedney from Blaenavon Heritage Community School, the winner of The Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year in Wales, was commended by judges for her “professionalism and great care” for all pupils past and present.
Congratulating all of the winners, Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, said:
“Wales has many outstanding teachers and it is only right that we recognise their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. For this reason, the Welsh Government is proud to support the Pearson Teaching Awards.
“I’d like to congratulate each of the winners on their remarkable achievements. Their efforts have been truly inspirational. As well as raising standards right across the board, they have made a very real and tangible difference to their pupils, their schools and their communities as a whole. Well done to all.”
