The first involving the dissolution of both Cardiff Metropolitan HE Corporation and University of Wales, Newport HE Corporation and the second the dissolution of the University of Wales, Newport HE Corporation alone.
The consultation which will run for sixteen weeks, will provide all interested parties, including staff and students, an opportunity to comment on the proposals.
Leighton Andrews said:
“On Tuesday 17 July I informed the National Assembly for Wales that, after considering the evidence before me, I believe at this stage that HEFCW's proposal for a strong metropolitan university in South East Wales is a sound one. I have already welcomed the announcement made by the University of Glamorgan and University of Wales Newport.
“I have said before that I want to see an HE system in Wales which plays to the strengths of the individual institutions, and avoids unnecessary institutional competition.
“I believe at this point that HEFCW's recommendations for South East Wales, spearheaded by a focused research-intensive institution alongside a strong metropolitan university, could be the way forward and this is, at present, my preferred option."
