A group chosen to advise the Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, on the Welsh-medium Education Strategy has met for the first time today.
Thursday 08 November 2012

Eight candidates have been appointed to the advisory group. They represent a wide range of backgrounds and bring experience from different education and training sectors.

They also represent different geographical areas and the various issues and challenges facing those areas.

During the first meeting, the group will discuss with the Education Minister the planning of Welsh-medium education in the early years and the Welsh-language skills of practitioners.

Leighton Andrews said:

“The launch of our Welsh-medium Education Strategy was a major step forward in setting a strategic direction for Welsh-medium education.

“The members of my new advisory group each bring with them their own experiences and ideas which will play an important role in advising on the progress of the strategy.

"We will continue to work with all partners to ensure that the 2015 targets in the Strategy are met and that the Strategy sits alongside, and complements the work being undertaken to increase and strengthen the use of Welsh in our communities.”

The Welsh-medium Education Strategy, published in 2010, aims to develop effective Welsh-medium provision from nursery through to further and higher education, and has a detailed action plan and specific outcome targets.
