Leighton Andrews supports Speaker for Schools scheme as it launches in Wales

Speakers for Schools is the brain-child of BBC News Business Editor, Robert Peston. The scheme is designed to give young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to hear from inspirational people in modern life from business leaders, to politicians, sports people and academics.

The scheme is free for schools and colleges who want to get involved and is being administered by the charity, the Education and Employers Taskforce. Speakers address the big subjects in modern society including science, politics, culture, technology and ethics.

The scheme kicked-off in Wales this week. High-profile speakers, including the First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones, have delivered speeches to young people across the country.

Other speakers from the worlds of business, culture and academia supporting the Welsh launch include:  Lord Burns (Chairman Santander UK plc & Channel 4 Television), Alan Edmunds (Editor Western Mail newspaper), Huw Edwards (news presenter & BBC journalist), Henry Engelhardt (CEO Admiral Group), Dame Amelia Fawcett (Board Director, Guardian Media Group), Andrew Green (Chief Executive National Library of Wales), Efa Gruffudd-Jones (Chief Executive Urdd Gobaith Cymru), to name but a few.

Leighton Andrews said: 

“I’m really looking forward to getting involved in the Speakers for School programme in Wales.

“The scheme provides a great opportunity for our young people to hear from a wide range of speakers who are leaders in their field, who they wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to see and hear.

“I have high hopes that Speakers for Schools will raise our young people’s aspirations, broaden their horizons and encourage them to reach their potential.”
