The Minister was joined at Carngafallt by representatives from the RSPB and Tesco, following the store’s decision to pass all proceeds from sales of carrier bags in its Welsh stores to the bird protection charity.
The Minister enjoyed a tour of the site and was talked through the improvements and investments that will be made as a result of charitable donations from Tesco.
Speaking from the RSPB reserve, the Minister said;
“I am delighted to have had the chance to visit Carngafallt as part of my bike ride across Wales. It really is a beautiful site and a fabulous place to bird watch, and enjoy the local wildlife and views.
“It is good to know that this reserve will be further improved as a result of the Welsh bag charge and Tesco’s decision to pass proceeds from the charge onto the RSPB.
“Today I have heard all about some of the improvements that the bag charge will help to fund here at Carngafallt , such as the new circular walk. I am sure these improvements will make this fantastic site even more attractive to visitors and wildlife alike. “
As a direct result of the bag charge, Tesco have already passed £300,000 onto the RSPB since 1 October 2012.
The Minister added:
“Our carrier bag charge has been in place in Wales for six months now. I am so pleased that not only has it already dramatically reduced bag use in Wales, it is also starting to deliver real benefits to environmental and good causes here in Wales. “
Ruth Girardet, Tesco’s Director for Corporate Responsibility & Community Director said:
"We are delighted to be working with RSPB Cymru to protect reserves across Wales. We have already raised over £300,000 and we know that this will ensure thousands of visitors can experience these amazing places, both now and in the future.
“This builds on our broader partnership with RSPB - Together for Trees - where we are working together to protect and preserve significant areas of rainforests around the world".
The visit was one of a number of stops made by the Environment Minister as part of his 285 mile bike ride across Wales. The Minister began the ride on Sunday 1st April and is due to finish in Cardiff Bay at 5pm on Wednesday.
The Minister is promoting cycling as an excellent from of recreation and sustainable travel, and as an enjoyable way of maintaining health and well being. Proceeds from the bike ride will be passed to official Welsh Government charities for 2012 which are the Alzheimer’s Society and Tools for Self Reliance Cymru.
