Mr Hughes is an Anglesey beef and sheep farmer, he was President of NFU Cymru from 2001 to 2006 and is the Chairman of the North Wales TB Eradication Board.

The Minister said:

“I am delighted to announce Mr Hughes’ appointment. He  has had a long and distinguished career in farming and will bring a wealth of experience to his role.

“I value the Steering Group’s role as a key forum focused on raising standards of animal health and welfare in Wales and look forward to working with the Chair and group in the future.”

The Steering Group was set up in October 2004 to advise and assist the Welsh Government on a range of key issues that impact on animal health and welfare. The group has 17 members who represent the industry in Wales; the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales is also a member of the group.
