These statistics provide an annual summary on a range of indicators looking at the state of the environment in Wales and allocates them a status based on their long term trends. Indicators cover a variety of environmental topics including climate change, waste, flooding, water quality and biodiversity.
Environment and Sustainable Development Minister, John Griffiths said he welcomed the latest statistics which provide the Welsh Government with an overview of progress against its Environment Strategy.
Mr Griffiths said:
“It is important that we have regular updates on the state of Wales’ environment so we can monitor our progress, review policy where necessary and focus on areas of need.
“I recognise that we face significant challenges to meet our goals for the environment. We have made solid progress, but this is a challenging agenda.
"However our actions in areas such as waste are having a clear affect and the ongoing development of our proposals for sustainable development and managing the natural environment. The Climate Change strategy first annual report reaffirms our commitment to this agenda and highlights several key areas of progress.
“Wales has been successful in improving its housing stock through Welsh Governments fuel poverty programmes such as Nest and arbed. These have already provided a major boost to support the low carbon economy and green jobs. It will also contribute to eradicating of fuel poverty, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and improving the energy performance of homes in Wales, helping thousands out of fuel poverty. This will further enable us to fulfil our vision for an environment that is clean, healthy, biologically diverse and valued by the people of Wales. “
In the year ahead the Welsh Government will be consulting on a Sustainable Development Bill to develop and strengthen its approach to sustainable development in Wales and an Environment Bill to secure a more integrated approach to management of the environment.
