Minister announces innovative Welsh Race Forum

A new race forum will be set up in Wales, the Welsh Government Minister responsible for equalities announced today.
Friday 14 October 2011

Speaking at a National Black History month event, Jane Hutt explained how she has commissioned a forum which represents the main race organisations in Wales, who will make their opinions known on Welsh Government policy-making directly affecting them.

The Minister said:

"I am committed to improving the quality of life for everyone in Wales.  Whatever people’s background, they should have the same opportunities as everyone else.

"The new Race Forum will be central to achieving and maintaining this goal.  The forum members will inform and contribute to the development of a national strategic approach on Race Equality and ensure that those organisations with an interest in race issues have an opportunity to have an input into relevant policy issues."

The Race Forum will provide the Welsh Government with expert support and advice to heighten our understanding of the key issues and barriers from integration within Black and Minority Ethnic Communities and look at practical examples of how best practice within communities can overcome such barriers.

The Forum will meet on a bi-annual basis and the first meeting will be in February 2012.  The minutes will be publicly available on the internet.

It will also have a key role in advising Welsh Ministers in respect of their duties under the Equality Act on engagement and accessibility.
