£8.5 million improves home life for Welsh disabled

As the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked all over the world, the Equalities Minister, Jane Hutt saw how Welsh Government investment is protecting and empowering vulnerable people.

Jane Hutt visited the Dixon family in St Mellon’s to see how a grant to upgrade facilities at their home has greatly improved their quality of life.

Mr Dixon, who has a mobility impairment, has benefitted from alterations to his bathroom and the entrance to the family home thanks to the Welsh Government’s Physical Adaptation grant (PAG).

The work, which had a combined value of £3,752, included the widening of the driveway and the installation of a level access shower.  The work was completed in October and has greatly improved day to day living.

Equalities Minister, Jane Hutt, said:

“It was a pleasure to meet the Dixon family and I am very grateful that they have welcomed me into their home so I can see, first hand, the immeasurable  benefit the Physical Adaptation Grant enables.

“These adaptations and alterations have really promoted independence and an easier mobility for Mr Dixon, and I am delighted that the Welsh Government has been able to top up the PAG fund with Centrally Retained Capital to help make this happen.”

The Physical Adaptation Grant is funded by the Welsh Government providing the means for registered social landlords, in this case Wales and West Housing Association, to undertake necessary adaptations requested by an individual’s occupational therapist.

The sum of £8.5 million has been allocated for PAGs in 2011/12, of which £7 million has been made available from the Social Housing Grant budget and £1.5 million from the Centrally Retained Capital Fund.

Demand for these grants continues to increase substantially.
