First Minister hails success of biotechnology company

First Minister Rhodri Morgan saw for himself the cutting edge technology of Cardiff-based biotechnology company Q-Chip, when he visited their new laboratories in Newport Road today (Wednesday, 12November)
Wednesday 12 November 2008

The firm is one of the leading developers of precision microsphere based packaging products for the pharmaceutical and diagnostic markets and employs 23 people who are all educated to degree level.

The First Minister said:

In these hard economic times, science-based companies like Q-Chip, who provide highly specialised niche products and high quality jobs are a key component in keeping the Welsh economy moving as they are less susceptible to market downturns than those who produce mass market goods.

Despite the current economic climate the company has expanded and moved in to new laboratories, and is committed to researching and developing new products. This will not only help them weather the storm better than others but also put them in pole position when the economic upturn occurs.

Q-Chip is a spin off from Cardiff University science research. We need to see many more examples of the commercialisation of the intellectual property produced in our universities.
