Referendum period begins as order made by the Queen

The referendum on further law making powers for the National Assembly will take place on 3 March 2011, following an order made by the Queen yesterday.
Thursday 16 December 2010

The Referendum Order was made by Her Majesty in the Privy Council, officially marking the start of the referendum period from today (December 16).

The Welsh Assembly Government will not engage in any new publicity relating to the referendum, for the whole referendum period.  This will apply from today and up to and including the date of the poll.

Political parties, other organisations and individuals will set out the arguments for and against during the campaign.

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones said:

"The approval of the order by the Queen in the Privy Council means we can now proceed full steam ahead towards the referendum."

Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones said:

"I’m glad the final hurdle has been crossed and look forward to the poll."

The question will be:
"Do you want the Assembly now to be able to make laws on matters in the 20 subject areas it has powers for?"
