Reading is for life, not just for Christmas

Children at a Carmarthen primary school were delighted when a special visitor dropped in to read them a festive tale.
Tuesday 13 December 2011

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones today (Tue 13 Dec) joined pupils at Richmond Park School to watch their Christmas play and join in with the singing of carols.

The First Minister said:

"It has been an honour to play a part in the school’s Christmas calendar, especially as it is clear the staff and pupils at Richmond Park have worked so hard to put together such a fantastic concert.

"It was lovely to have the opportunity to read with some of the pupils, like I have with my own children for several years.

"Encouraging our sons and daughters to read is vital to developing their literacy skills.  Speaking, listening, reading and writing are the key skills that enable us all to make sense of the world around us.

"The Welsh Government National Literacy Programme is a five-year action plan to transform standards in Wales. Every school in the country is obliged to focus and place huge emphasis on the development of literacy.

"A high level of competency in these essential skills is vital in helping all of our young people in Wales to reach their potential, and this is one of the central aims of our Programme for Government."
