First Minister Carwyn Jones has officially opened the new Port Talbot offices of a rapidly expanding credit union.

Neath Port Talbot Credit Union has set up a new base in Station Road, adding to its offices in Neath and Taibach and its mobile service launched last year.

The First Minister said:

"This new office will make an important contribution to the services that the credit union can provide to the people of Port Talbot and the wider area.

"Membership of this credit union has doubled over the past two years, a testimony to the hard work and dedication of the directors, staff and volunteers.

"The Welsh Government is proud to support Welsh credit unions to promote their services, expand their capacity and improve their coverage across the country. Credit unions offer an affordable alternative to high cost lenders and payday loan companies, whilst offering a safe place for people to save their money for that rainy day.

"Tackling poverty and financial exclusion is a priority for the Welsh Government and credit unions are ideally placed to help us achieve this. That is why support for credit unions is a key commitment in our Programme for Government."
