Speaking to the Minister recently, Sir Richard said:
“I am really pleased that Wales is to become the first UK country to introduce an opt-out system of organ donation.
“This move will save many lives. Across the UK, 90% of the population support organ donation, but just 29% are on the organ donation register. An opt-out system makes it easy for everyone to become a donor unless they exercise their right not to become one.
“Well done Wales. May Scotland and England follow promptly so even more lives can be saved.”
Lesley Griffiths said:
“People in Wales are dying while waiting for a transplant. An opt-out system will increase the number of organ donors in Wales, allowing more lives to be saved and improved.
“It is very helpful to have high profile support for our policy, which we expect to be in place by 2015.“Between now and then, it is very important that people continue to sign up to the Organ Donation Register and make their families and friends aware of their intentions.
“We are currently consulting on our proposals, and I would urge everyone with a point of view to feed into the consultation before the end of January.”
