The quiz, in which the four Merthyr Tydfil high schools took part on Friday (Nov 16), was held at the Welsh Government’s Rhydycar building.
During the event, Year 8 pupils from Afon Taf, Pen y Dre, Cyfarthfa and Bishop Hedley schools answered questions relating to substance misuse, anti-social behaviour and community safety.
The Welsh Government-backed quiz was organised by South Wales Police, in partnership with the Fire and Rescue Service, Road Safety Wales and the Healthy Schools campaign.
Every secondary school in Wales is invited to take part in the competition with 22 quizzes taking place simultaneously in different venues across the country.
After a tough competition, Cyfarthfa High School emerged victorious, led by Captain Wendy Wong and her team Danielle Bartz, Christophe Lherondel-Davies, Oliver Davies and Brandon Barnett.
The winning team will now compete in a regional final against successful schools from similar heats in other local authorities throughout South Wales.
The regional final will take place at South Wales Police headquarters in Bridgend during December. The winner will then progress to the national final in the New Year to battle for the championship with teams from Dyfed Powys, Gwent and North Wales.
Lesley Griffiths AM, the Minister for Health and Social Services said:
“This initiative is a positive example of the Welsh Government, all four Police Forces, Local Education Authorities and other agencies across Wales collaborating with schools to help young people stay safe and encourage them to play a valuable role in society.”
PC Angela Rogers, from the Community Safety Department in Merthyr Tydfil, said:
“To be able to hold such a worthwhile event in such an iconic building and to see all the schools in Merthyr Tydfil represented is very pleasing and encouraging for all pupils involved.
“The knowledge all participants illustrated was not only highly impressive but will also ensure those young people will be safer and better people for it.
“We wish them every success in the regional finals next month.”
