Dr Chamberlain will take over from Dr Peter Higson who will retire at the end of the year. He has been Chief Executive since the organisation’s establishment in 2004.
HIW is responsible for reviewing the quality and safety of patient care provided by healthcare organisations in Wales.
Dr Chamberlain is currently the Welsh Government’s Chief Statistician and was responsible for establishing the Local Government Data Unit between 2001 and 2003. Between 1990 and 2001, she worked for the Audit Commission/District Audit Wales, conducting reviews of local government and health services.

Her many years of conducting reviews of local government and health services will be invaluable in her new role at HIW as it monitors and evaluates healthcare services across Wales to ensure we continually improve services and patient care.”
Health Minister Lesley Griffiths said:
“I would like to pay tribute to Dr Higson for his work in establishing and leading HIW and thank him for his decades of service to the NHS. Dr Chamberlain will build on the firm foundations established in HIW and I look forward to working with her.”
Dr Peter Higson said:
“It has been a unique privilege to be the Chief Executive of Wales’s first independent health inspectorate and to be able to make a significant contribution to the quality and safety of the healthcare received by Welsh Citizens.”
Dr Chamberlain said:
“I am delighted to be appointed as the new Chief Executive of HIW. HIW performs an incredibly important role in the independent inspection and regulation of health services in Wales. I look forward to building on the excellent work of the organisation to continue to improve the citizen’s experience of healthcare in Wales.”
Dr Chamberlain will take up her new role on 7 January 2013.
