Mr Heaney is currently Corporate Director Social Services at Caerphilly County Borough Council and replaces Rob Pickford who announced his retirement earlier this year.
David Sissling, Director General of the Department of Health, Social Services and Children said:
“I am delighted to announce the appointment of Albert Heaney as the new Director of Social Services, Children and Families.
“Albert will bring a wealth of experience to the role, and joins the Welsh Government at a time of significant work to reform social services, children and family policy. I am sure that his experience will be invaluable in terms of progressing this agenda.
“I would also like to pay tribute to Rob Pickford, who is retiring, for his work in leading the Social Services, Children and Families Directorate, and especially for laying the foundations for the transformation of social services and our work to give children the start that they need in life.”
