£800,000 town centre boost for Aberystwyth

Work to transform the appearance of buildings and boost businesses in Aberystwyth’s town centre has taken a step forward, thanks to £800,000 Welsh Government funding, announced by Regeneration Minister Huw Lewis.
Tuesday 27 March 2012

The money has been awarded to Ceredigion County Council who will use the Regeneration Area funding to extend its Town Improvement Grant (TIG) programme which supports renovation work to properties in the town centre.

The funding is the continuation of a programme that has been managed by Ceredigion County Council for 2 years.  The TIG programme is consistent with the Regeneration Area’s aim of developing an attractive and thriving town centre for Aberystwyth.

The announcement comes a day ahead of a Plenary debate on the Assembly’s Business and Enterprise Committee’s report into the regeneration of town centres, in which the Minister will outline his vision for town centre development.

Huw Lewis said:

"A vibrant and active town centre is very important for Aberystwyth, so I am delighted to announce this funding to help ensure we make the most of what the town has to offer.

"The refurbishment work will provide a boost for local contractors, and once complete, high quality retail premises will offer job opportunities for local residents as well as improving the retail offer in local communities.  Improved town centres will also help to attract tourists and boost the economy of Aberystwyth."
