Minister Takes to the Streets in Rhyl

Local Government and Communities Minister Carl Sargeant today accompanied Community Support Officers on a patrol visit in Rhyl to see the work they are undertaking in the local community.

The Welsh Government has committed to funding an additional 500 CSOs in Wales as one of its top five commitments in its Programme for Government.

As of 1st April 2012 165 Officers will either be deployed or in training with the aim of all 500 CSOs being recruited, trained and deployed by September 2013.

Whilst on the patrol visit the Minister had the opportunity to talk with members of the community to see how the CSOs are integrating into their local area and engaging with community organisations to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime.

Carl Sargeant said:

"I am pleased with progress made on delivery of our commitment to appoint 500 new CSOs through joint working between Welsh Government, the Association of Chief Police Officers Cymru (ACPOC) and the Police Authorities of Wales (PAW).

"These CSOs are not a replacement for warranted police officers. They will be a valuable and visible addition for existing police resources, working with local residents and community organisations to improve the quality of life of those affected by crime and anti-social behaviour.

"As well as meeting CSOs in Rhyl today I have also met with other first recruits in other parts of Wales who are now patrolling the streets and I have been impressed with their commitment and enthusiasm. I hope to be able to meet more CSOs as they undertake their training and start work within their communities."
