Carl Sargeant, Minister with responsibility for the Armed Forces, Families and Veterans in Wales has called on Welsh communities to take part in and support events ahead of this year’s Armed Forces Day on 30 June.

This year the National Event is being held in Plymouth, but there are many more events up and down the country being held in support of Armed Forces Day. In Wales, the First Minister is attending this year’s day of celebration in Cooper’s Field, Cardiff while Carl Sargeant will be attending the North Wales Armed Forces Day Parade and celebration at Caernarfon Castle on 7 July.

Carl Sargeant said:

"Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for people to show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community as well as raising public awareness of the contribution they make to our country.

"We owe our armed forces and veterans an immense debt of gratitude.  They do an incredible job protecting our security and defending our freedoms and way of life.   Recent and existing conflicts have brought home to us the sacrifices that our armed forces and their families make on our behalf.

"I am sure that the this year’s Armed Forces Day will be particularly poignant given the recent 30 year anniversary of the end of the Falklands War. The fighting cost the lives of 255 British servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend their country.

"Armed Forces Day will give people across Wales further opportunity to remember those who lost their lives in the Falklands War along with more recent conflict. I want to ensure that we as a country have an opportunity to pay tribute to them.

"The Welsh Government is happy to support the funding of flagship events in both North and South Wales (up to £10,000 each) on an ongoing basis to enable celebrations to take place on Armed forces Day."
