Minister publishes first progress report on Armed Forces support

The first progress report on action the Welsh Government is taking to deliver on the commitments it made in its Package of Support for the Armed Forces Community in Wales has been published.
Friday 30 November 2012

The Welsh Government is committed to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant and in November 2011 published the Welsh Government’s Package of Support for the Armed Forces Community in Wales.

The first annual update sets out the action the Welsh Government has taken during the last year to deliver against its commitment to work across the public sector to improve a range of public services.

The Minister with responsibility for the Armed Forces in Wales, Carl Sargeant said:

“The sacrifices that our servicemen and women, and their families, make are as clear today as they have ever been.”

“The Welsh Government is committed to improving the support we provide to the Armed Forces community in Wales in key areas that are devolved such as healthcare, housing and education.

“In Wales there are estimated to be at least a quarter of a million members of the Armed Forces Community, which includes serving personnel, reservists and cadets as well as their families and ex-service personnel. As a Government we want to ensure that this Community suffers no disadvantage when they access public services.

“In 2013 I plan to update the Package of Support and this will include taking on board further advice from my Expert Group on the Needs of the Armed Forces Community in Wales.”
