Funding boost for Llangefni Town Hall development

The Welsh Government’s Mon a Menai Regeneration Area Programme is to provide an additional £170,000 towards the refurbishment of Llangefni Town Hall, which is in the heart of the town, Regeneration Minister Huw Lewis announced today.
Monday 27 February 2012

The refurbishment of the town hall, which is a listed building, will improve the overall physical environment of the town and contribute towards its economic regeneration.  When complete it will house Menter Mon and it is expected to bring over 40 jobs to the town centre.

The Minister said:

“The refurbishment of a listed building is always challenging.  The location of Llangefni town hall in the centre of the town makes its refurbishment and future use pivotal for the regeneration of the area.  I am pleased that we can contribute a further £170,000 to the project through the Mon a Menai regeneration area programme.”

The town hall was built in 1871 but fell into disrepair after 1996 and has been unoccupied for more than a decade.

Gerallt Llewelyn Jones, Managing Director of Menter Mon said:

“It is important that we find viable new uses for our built heritage – the Town Hall is important to this market town of Llangefni and thjis investment means that it can revitalise its role as a hub for development.”

Isle of Anglesey County Council Leader, Councillor Bryan Owen, welcomed news of the additional Môn a Menai regeneration funding.

He added:

"The Llangefni town hall redevelopment project represents a significant investment in the town centre. The town hall is a historic and iconic building and I look forward to seeing it play an important role in revitalising the town centre and local economy."

The Welsh Government announced Mon a Menai as the second Strategic Regeneration Area in Wales in 2008. Since then over 100 projects have been approved with £21m of direct Welsh Government funding, attracting significant EU and other financial investment into the area.
