The data published today by the Office for National Statistics was collected on 27 March 2011 and shows that the Welsh population now stands at 3.06 million an increase of 153,000 since 2001.  It also shows where the fastest growing areas of Wales are and how the age structure of the population is changing.

Jane Hutt said:

"Thank you to all those who took the time to fill in the Census last year.  The data it provides us with is vital for planning education, transport and health services across Wales.

"With the Welsh population now standing at 3.06m we have to make sure we have the right services in the right places.

"Over the next year more data will be released from the Census which will reveal detail of ethnic group, religion, travel to work, health and families, identity, Welsh language, employment and education.  This will give us a fuller picture of Wales and the people living here."

The data being released today covers estimates of:

  • the usually resident population by single years of age,and sex for Wales and for England ; and by five year age bands and sex for local authority areas
    the number of households for Wales and for England, and for local authority areas;
