President-elect Barack Obama’s stunning victory represents a triumph of hope over fear. He now has two months to prepare for the huge job of translating that hope into improved conditions for jobs and health domestically for America. For us he faces the huge job of working with Gordon Brown and other democratically-elected leaders around the world to revitalise the global economy and pull the world out of recession and create new prosperity.
He has a challenge similar to that faced by Franklin Roosevelt when he was elected and will need to bring in the equivalent for our times of the New Deal that Roosevelt brought in three quarters of a century ago.
