Assembly measure seeks local service improvements

Local Government Minister, Dr Brian Gibbons will today [Monday 22 September] publish proposals to change the way local authorities, national parks and fire and rescue authorities account for the local services they provide.

The Assembly Government Measure would require authorities to secure and account for improvement in a much more open and clearer way. There will also be greater clarity in involving citizens and local partners in community planning. The Measure would also reform the way community strategies are drawn up.

The Minister said:

This Measure goes a long way in responding to the recommendations of the Beecham Review. It sets out how local government will contribute to the public service reform agenda and builds on the distinctive nature and experience of local government in Wales.

The intention is to create a new framework which links long-term community planning with shorter term service improvement.

I hope that the Measure will be received positively and seen as a way of offering authorities greater flexibility to respond to local needs while building on the experience of local authorities and others.
