The Digi TV project allows people to access local authority information and services via their digital TV set top boxes using their remote controls. The project has already been successfully trialled in the five Heads of the Valleys authorities and in Wrexham and it will now be rolled out in all other authorities in Wales. The All Wales trial is set to last a year and will be fully evaluated by April 2011.

Evaluation of the original pilot has shown that the project has been successful in helping those who do not have a computer at home, to access pages of information, request services, or provide the council with information.

The Minister made the announcement whilst visiting Contact Wrexham the county council’s one stop shop for accessing council information and services. He had a go at using the council’s Digi TV channel as well as seeing their open access computers that allow people who have called in to the centre to access its website.

He said:

“I am delighted to announce the expansion of the Digi TV trial to the whole of Wales. The evidence so far shows that it is an accessible and innovative way for people to connect with the local authorities. I am particularly pleased that this system will be available to the vast majority of Welsh homes once the digital switchover has taken place as any home with digital television signal should be able to access the services.  This means that digitally excluded people who don’t have access to the internet at home will now be able to access services similar to those available on the web. This project has a great deal of potential and if successful, could be extended to other public services such as health services.

“We are facing unprecedented pressures on public services in Wales and have to do things differently to ensure that we get value for money in all that we do. Digi TV is an excellent example of new and innovative ways of working that allow people to engage with service providers more easily and efficiently and therefore allows councils to plan their services appropriately. I hope that the all Wales trial is a success and that we will soon be using out television sets for more than just entertainment.”
