Appointment to Review Local Government Boundary Commission

Last December the Minister announced that he would not implement any of the electoral reviews recommended by the Commission ahead of the 2012 local elections but that he would establish an independent review of their programme of work.

The review will focus on the policies, operational objectives and procedures of the LGBCW and will identify actions to ensure that the electoral review programme is delivered to a high standard in time for the 2016 elections.

The Minister said:

"I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Glyn Mathias to lead this review. Glyn has a wealth of relevant expertise and I am sure that the time he spent working as a Commissioner with the Electoral Commission will be invaluable."

Glyn Mathias said:

"It is a vital component of our democratic system that the process of reviewing electoral arrangements in local government is robust, reasonable and independent of political parties and government.

"I hope this review of the work of the LGBCW will strengthen its independence and the quality of the work it does."

Biographical Note

Glyn Mathias is a former political journalist and a former Welsh member of the Electoral Commission.  During his career as a political journalist, he was political editor for both ITN in London and BBC Wales.  He went on to serve as a Member of the Electoral Commission. In this role he was responsible for boundary reviews in England and also represented Wales on the policy making board.

Mr Mathias no affiliation with any political party, the WLGA or the Commission itself.
