Minister outlines support for domestic abuse victims

Wales’ Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant today outlined a package of funding support for domestic abuse charities across the country.

Organisations including Welsh Women’s Aid, Hafan Cymru and Victim Support have been awarded funding for the next financial year to run a number of programmes which support both male and female victims, and their children. Other funded projects include perpetrator rehabilitation programmes.

The Minister also outlined capital funding to help address service provision in those areas of Wales that currently do not benefit from a One Stop Shop facility delivering front line domestic abuse services.

The Minister said,

"Welsh domestic abuse charities have a proven record in helping victims get their lives back on track. It’s crucial that in turn these organisations receive the help they need to continue their high levels of service and care.

"The Assembly Government is committed to doing all it can to support these groups and, despite less money in the public purse, this funding package demonstrates that.

"Domestic abuse in all its forms can tear apart families and leave victims with emotional and physical scars lasting a lifetime. I hope this funding go one step further to ending domestic abuse once and for all."

The Welsh Assembly Government has committed £4.7 million towards provision of domestic abuse support services in Wales over the 2011-12 period.
