The funding will provide a boost to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s plans to regenerate the town by improving the appearance of the High Street, creating greater links with Darran Park and enhancing other public spaces as well as creating jobs and attracting investment in local businesses.
High quality, local materials will be used to create new street furniture and artwork, while small grants will be available to assist businesses in the area to improve the exterior of their commercial premises. The construction contracts generated as a result of the investment are expected to create local employment opportunities.
The scheme is backed with £2 million from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government. A further £0.6m will come from the Heads of the Valleys programme as well as funding from the Council and the private sector.
Ms Davies said:
“This is great news for the people of Ferndale. Revitalising the town centre will bring renewed opportunities for individuals and business as more investment is attracted to the area - increasing the town’s role as a hub for economic activity which, in turn, will raise prosperity across the whole community.”
The next phase of work is anticipated to begin later this year, and the £3.2m programme is expected to be completed by 2012. It follows improvements that are close to completion at the library, Anchor Hotel, and Lime Street walkway.
Councillor Paul Cannon, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Housing, said:
“We are very pleased to have secured this funding, which will enable us to build upon all the good work we have already carried out in Ferndale.
“Ferndale is a priority town centre for us as demonstrated by the level of investment it is receiving, which this additional money will ensure continues.”
